James “Jim” Edwin Lyerly, 77, of Salisbury, passed away Thursday, March 4, 2010 at CMC-NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a 13 year period of declining health.
Born September 27, 1932 in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Wilma Safrit Lyerly and Arthur Douglas “Bud” Lyerly. Mr. Lyerly was a graduate of China Grove High School.
A veteran of the United States Army, Mr. Lyerly was employed by Salisbury Metal Products, retiring with 38 years of service. He was known in the community for his precision sawmill work for his fellow customers.
Mr. Lyerly was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where he held many offices, including Sunday School Superintendent, church councilman, Lutheran Men in Missions and usher. He was a lifelong member of the Auxiliary of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary.
Survivors included his loving wife of 58 years, Rebecca “Becky” Deal Lyerly; son, James Douglas Lyerly of Salisbury; and daughter Maressia Lyerly Fox (Roger) of Lenoir; one grandchild, Miranda Fox (Brian) of Raleigh.
Visitation: 6-7:30 PM – Friday, March 5, 2010 at Lyerly Funeral Home.
Service: 11:00 AM – Saturday, March 6, 2010 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where he will lie in-state for 30 minutes before the service. The Rev. William “Bill” Ketchie and the Rev. Floyd Bost will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
