Barry Frederick Abernethy, 76, of Salisbury passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.
Born in Rowan County on August 18, 1941, he was the son of the late Vera Williams Abernethy and William Turner Abernethy.
Barry served in the US Army from 1959-1961, stationed in Germany. He worked at Thomasville Furniture and later for the Department of Corrections for 22 1/2 years. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion, and the Franklin Ellis Lions Club. Mr. Abernethy was a historian and loved gardening, coastal fishing, the beach, boating and spending time with family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Abernethy.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Patty Swicegood Abernethy, whom he married on February 15, 1969; son, Jeff Abernethy; brother, William Abernethy (Barbara); sisters, Martha Shaver (Jim), Sarah Abernethy, Betty Morgan (Charles); sister-in-law, Susan Abernethy; cherished friends, Buck Pickard (Peggy), Bob Kennerly (Judy), Jerry and Chris Kepley, Tony Hager (Kay), James Brooks and Don McClain (Connie)
Visitation: 2:30-3:30 PM Monday, May 14, 2018, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 355 E. Ridge Rd., Salisbury, NC 28144.
Service: 4:00 PM Monday, May 14, 2018, at Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Darrell Norris officiating.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers the family has asked for donations to be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, 355 E. Ridge Road, Salisbury, NC 28144 in memory of Barry.
A private burial will be held at a later date.
