Jean Morgan Obituary

Jean Hartman Morgan, 92, of Salisbury, went to be with the Lord August 1, 2018, at Novant Health Rowan, Salisbury, NC.

Jean was born September 5, 1925, in Rowan County, NC, to the late Oscar Leroy Hartman and Berdie Bame Hartman.

Jean Morgan was a lifetime member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church, Salisbury, where she sang in the choir in past years. She graduated from Boyden High School. Jean worked as a seamstress at Rowan Manufacturing and as a sales clerk at The Gold Shop. She volunteered at the YMCA of Rowan County as a lifeguard and swimming instructor. Jean taught swimming lessons to Special Education classes for the YMCA for over 30 years. Her volunteer work for Special Olympics was her passion. She spent hours making name tags, lining up races, sorting shirts, and making sure each athlete had a physical to compete in the swimming and track & field events. She received the JC Penney Golden Rule Award for her volunteer work. She was inducted into the Northern Piedmont Cluster Volunteer Hall of Fame on October 5, 1995. “A faithful volunteer for eighteen years, Jean Morgan has served as Aquatics Instructor for all ages and levels, Aquatic Coach for Special Olympics, CPR Instructor, and organizer for Special Olympics swim and track & field competitions.” Jean also received the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 1995. She received the Distinguished Service Award from the JF Hurley Family YMCA for working with special needs swimmers in 2014. Jean loved to knit and crochet and created many beautiful items.

Jean Morgan was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Emerson Morgan, whom she married October 5, 1947, and passed away November 7, 1990; her brother, and his wife, Elwin and Betty Hartman; and her brothers in law, Ben Shue, and Grady Peele.
