Donald Allen Crumpton

Donald Allen Crumpton passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2026, just one day short of his 86th birthday. Donald was a 1958 graduate of Walland High School in Blount County, Tennessee, where he lived and was raised. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1963. He was the first member of his family to achieve a college education, which served as a launching pad for a highly successful engineering career. Donald’s professional path included Tennessee, Illinois, Kentucky, and finally North Carolina, which became home to him and his family. In his heart, he always remained a Tennessee Volunteer.

The world would have been a far different place without him. He left an indelible mark on his family, and those around him. He was a friend to all, and those who knew him were better for it. He was known for his intelligence, relaxed nature, and effortless, ever-present sense of humor. He also held great capacity and intellect for many different interests and passions. The mentoring, generosity and loyalty that Donald demonstrated created a legacy in people that will live well beyond his lifetime.

Donald was preceded in death by his wife Doris, the love of his life for 47 years. Doris was a full and supportive partner with Donald in all of their endeavors, and their relationship was a true love story. Donald was also preceded in death by his daughter, Lara Christine Crumpton; and his parents, Thad and Ruby Crumpton of Maryville, Tennessee. He is survived by his son Christopher Crumpton and spouse Katherine of Clemmons, North Carolina; several grandchildren; and his brother David Crumpton and spouse Angela of St. Augustine, Florida and their children, respective spouses and grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday July 6, 2026, from 10:00-11:00 AM at Haven Lutheran Church, 207 W Harrison St, Salisbury, NC. A brief graveside service celebrating Donald’s life will be held afterward at 11:30 am at City Memorial Park, 1310 W. Innes Street, Salisbury, NC 28144. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of the love of trains he carried and shared with his family, please feel free to donate to the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Salisbury, NC in his name.
