Garry Michael Cloer, 68, passed away March 3, 2021 at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House.
He was born April 5, 1952 in Rowan County, the only son of Sadie and Gaither Cloer, Jr., who preceded him in death.
He is survived by an aunt he dearly loved, Christine “Cricket” Cloer and 4 cousins he grew up with, Lisa Cloer Schneider (Rick), Annina Difonzo Brown (Ray), Debbie Difonzo Turturici (Ron), and Johnny Cloer (Linda). During his declining years, Linda was Garry’s sole caregiver prior to going to a nursing home and made all decisions regarding his health care. She made sure he kept all of his doctor’s appointments and provided for all of his needs.
Garry graduated from Boyden High School, and later graduated with honors from Gardner Webb in 1978. He spent most of his life working with disabled children at the Rowan Vocational Workshops and the NC Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services.
Although Garry was small in stature, he did big things in his lifetime. He worked many years with the Salisbury Jaycees and held many offices, including president. He was instrumental in bringing pro wrestling events to Rowan County, including future stars like Ric Flair and Andre the Giant. In 1987, the state chapter honored Garry with a certificate of achievement for his many accomplishments. In later years, he held offices with the NC Rehabilitation Services.
An avid sports fan, he enjoyed following the Braves, Orioles, Tar Heels, and the Panthers. Garry also loved animals, especially his Pomeranian “Lance”.
Garry wished to be cremated and at his request there will be no visitation or services.
Memorials may be made to the ASPCA, PO Box 96929, Washington, DC 20090-6929.
