Irene Hinson Obituary

Irene McKinney Hinson, 94, passed away on May 29, 2023 at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury after several years of declining health.

Born in Hyde County, North Carolina on July 16, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Junious Thomas McKinney and Xenia Rue Selby McKinney. Following her graduation from Englehard High School (Hyde County) in 1947, she joined her family who had relocated to Rowan County to continue farming.

Irene began working in textile manufacturing at Cannon Mills Company at the age of 17, and she retired with over 50 years of service to Cannon Mills and its successors in 1998. In post-retirement she worked in the after school child care program at Knollwood Elementary School, where she received much joy from being with the children.

She was a loyal member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Salisbury, where she attended regularly as long as her health permitted. Her gifts of loving and giving to others will always be remembered.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 66 years Harvey Calvin (Bub) Hinson, sisters Ruth Mann, Willie Testa, Lois Fulp, and Eunice Dwiggins, twin sister Emogene Carawan, brothers Hyatt (Mac), V.A (Snooks), Noah, Earl and P.D. McKinney.

Irene is survived by her daughter and son-in-law; Tamara Hinson Barker and Timothy Eric Barker, her grandsons and their wives; Andrew Ryan Barker (Ariail) and Thomas Clinton Barker (Katie), her great grandsons; Matterson Gray Barker and Davis William Barker; brother P.H. McKinney and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family thanks all of her devoted and loyal caregivers for their kind and compassionate care. Love and appreciation is also extended to the close friends, family, and neighbors who so willingly offered their love and support of Irene; bringing full-circle the love and care which she shared with them throughout her life.
