Katie (Smith) Mayhew

December 5, 1946 ~ February 16, 2021 (age 74)

Obituary

Katie Smith Mayhew, age 74 of Salisbury, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2021. Born in Hillsborough, NC on December 5, 1946, she was the only child of Flora Elizabeth and Cornor Leon Smith. Katie was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She treasured her family and embraced every moment with them. Her vibrant personality was a welcome addition anywhere she went, and always made those around her laugh. Sometimes, that laughter was at her expense, but even then, hers was the loudest. She smiled and loved with her whole heart and never met a stranger. Her hugs could cure any illness or heartache, and her cooking could do the same. She believed all problems could be solved with a Sunday dinner and she was right. Her house was seldom quiet. It has been a playground for her grandchildren, a place where her kids could rest, a spot for a cold drink, and a Coca-Cola shrine. If you were ever unsure of the season, or next holiday, a quick drop-in would be your answer. She played the piano, directed a choir, and was the only lady crowned Rodeo Queen that wouldn’t get on the horse. She loved to sing and photographed every occasion.

Katie will be missed by her loving husband, Gary Mayhew, her four children, Christopher (Tammy) Smith, Jennifer (Dale) Leatherman, Nick (Trina) Smith and Brittany (Johnny) Wear, and her most prized possessions, Kaitlin, Alex, Austin, Will, Jack and Delaney.

At Katie’s request, there will not be a formal service, but a celebration of life when we can gather safely.

Memorial contributions may be made to Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary, 220 Grace Church Rd, Salisbury, NC 28147.
