Martin Shackelford "Dick" Obituary

Martin O’Berry Shackelford “Dick”, 96, of New London passed away on Monday, March 24, 2025 at the W.G. Bill Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born in Wilson, NC on April 14, 1928, he was the son of the late William Hines Shackelford “Big Daddy” and Elizabeth Galloway Shackelford “Betty” or “Granny”.

Mr. Shackelford worked for his family’s lumber company, Shackelford Lumber Company. He also worked in the textile industry, at Berico Oil, and as a park security guard. He was a member of the Woodland Fire Department and was an avid fisherman, loved trains, and had a passion for baseball. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving in World War II and the Korean War.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane Beale Shackelford, who passed away in July, 2023. They had been friends since they were 10 years old and married on November 17, 1956. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Martin Vann Shackelford; daughter, Becky Oliver Walker; grandson, Joshua Robert Oliver; four great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Salisbury National Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Lyerly Volunteer Joint Services Honor Guard.
