Rev. Robert Myers Obituary

Reverend Robert Edward Myers departed this earthly realm on July 8, 2023. Rev. Myers dedicated his life to serving the spiritual needs of several United Church of Christ (UCC) parishes in N.C. He also touched countless young and young-at-heart lives with his volunteerism at the North Carolina Transportation Museum and Trinity Oaks Senior Retirement Center.

Rev. Myers was born Nov. 4, 1931, in Thomasville, N.C. He earned undergraduate degrees at Pfeiffer Junior College and Catawba College. He also received a Master of Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary in Lancaster, Penn. Throughout his 57 years as a minister, he wholeheartedly embraced his calling—guiding and supporting UCC congregations in Rockwell, Faith, Lenoir and Kannapolis, N.C.

Rev. Myers was renowned for his captivating junior sermons that seamlessly blended biblical wisdom with practical applications for the youngest in the congregation. He always made a special effort to teach and explain the symbolism of the church decor so that congregations understood the history and meaning of their surroundings and how the symbols and art related to the pursuit of their faith.

Beyond the pulpit, Rev. Myers was active in the 1960s and 1970s in Civitan and was awarded Civitan of the Year in N.C. in 1973. His greatest joy was being a docent at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, N.C. He grew up next to a railroad track in Thomasville and a train whistle was one of the first sounds he heard. He never lost the joy and fascination of the railroad. He was a docent at the museum for more than 25 years, leading countless tours and was known for the annual reading of the Polar Express during the Christmas season.

Rev. Myers is preceded in death by his mother, Effie Sechrest Myers, and his father, William Edward Myers, both of Thomasville. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Carolyn Adkins Myers, of Salisbury, sons Charles Robert Myers (Leiott) of Silver Point, Tenn., and John Edward Myers (Betsy) of Salisbury, and grandsons Riley Edward Myers and Griffin Correll Myers, both of Salisbury.

A memorial service was held at Trinity Oaks Retirement Center on Thursday, July 13.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Trinity Oaks Memorial Fund (www.trinityoaks.net) or The North Carolina Transportation Museum (www.nctransportationmuseum.org).
