Louis B. Horne, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 24, joining the love of his life, Shirley, in heaven. He had been persevering through medical challenges as well as enduring the intense sadness of Shirley's passing 18 months ago. Married for 63 years, he missed her constantly and looked forward to the day he would join her.
Louis was raised in Bessemer City, NC where he enlisted in the United States Air Force after High School. Soon after he was stationed at Sculthorpe Air Base in England where he met and fell in love with Shirley.
Together they did an outstanding job of raising 3 children during Lou's 22 year Air Force career, living overseas and moving more than a dozen times. As a family there were many adventures and a wealth of knowledge gained from living in so many countries. It was a truly enviable experience, and we are extremely grateful.
Louis's last deployment before retiring was as Chief of Security Police at John Hay Air Force Base in Baguio City, Philippines.
After retiring from the USAF, Lou was employed by the W.G (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury, NC where he also retired as Chief of Police.
We all welcomed and sought his advice until the very end as he never lost his wealth of wisdom. Lou was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, and he will be forever missed. He stayed active in the VFW, American Legion, and Elks Lodge after retirement and enjoyed traveling and shopping with Shirley.
Louis is survived by daughters Paula Rusher (Mike) of Salisbury, Tracy of Concord, Son Victor (Gosia) Little Rock AR. Grand children Madison and Adrien Rusher, Tanner and Jake Spears and 2 Great grandchildren. He is also survived by his faithful four legged companion Benji, who helped him through the last 18 months of grieving.
His strength and dedication to Shirley and our family will always be a source of great pride,
A graveside service with full military honors, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday September 1, 2021 at the National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury NC 28144
