Roy Hartford, Sr. Obituary

Roy Lee Hartford, Sr. passed away at the age of 86 on October 26, 2020.

Mr. Hartford was born in Appalachia, Virginia to the late Thomas (TJ) Hartford and Kathleen Reynolds Webb.

He was also preceded in death by step-father James Webb and brothers Harve (HC) Hartford and Bruce Hartford.

Mr. Hartford joined the army at the tender age of 14, earning him the nickname "Youngblood". He was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division, 7th Cavalry Regiment. At the age of 15, he found himself in the middle of the Korean War where he was awarded a Bronze Star for rescuing a buddy while pinned down by enemy machine gun fire. He also received the Combat Infantryman's Badge, The Korean Campaign emblem with cluster, The National Defense Service Medal, The Meritorious Unit Emblem, The UN Ribbon and a Purple Heart. Mr. Hartford also served in the Marine Corps, the Air Force, and the Merchant Marines. After his military service, Mr. Hartford was an over the road truck driver.

Those left to cherish his memory are sons David Hartford (Darlene) and George Hartford (Vicki) of KY, Christopher Hartford (Lisa) of TN, Roy Hartford, Jr. and Jonathan Hartford of North Carolina. Daughters Elizabeth Sawyer (Alex) and Angelina Graham (Terry) of North Carolina. Sisters Margaret (Peggy) Lowry and Lynda Hartford of Bakersfield, CA. A beloved aunt, Shirley Moore of Appalachia, VA and a special friend Beulah Rawlings of Winchester, VA. Mother of his four children, Rosemary Cook Morgan. Affectionately known as "Pop-pop" to 20 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and will be fondly remembered as Uncle Roy by numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside Service: 10:00 AM Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, NC 28144, with military honors conducted by the Lyerly Joint Services Volunteer Honor Guard.
