Sarah Frances (Weast) McKinney

Sarah Frances Weast McKinney, 89, of Salisbury passed away, Tuesday, March 27, 2018. She was born in Rutherford County on May 31, 1928, to the late Pauline Graham and F. Chalmers Weast.  She graduated from Mt. Ulla High School in 1945 and graduated from Appalachian Teacher’s College in 1949 with a degree in library science.

On August 5, 1951, she married V.A. (Snooks) McKinney, a local dairy farmer.  Frances was a loving wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She instilled in her daughters and grandchildren, the love of God, nature, family skills and values.  One never left her home, after visiting without taking a baked good, a plant or some token of love and friendship. “Let’s go and make this a good day” is one of her legacies that her family will treasure.

She was preceded in death by her husband, VA, and daughter, Beth McKinney Owen. She is survived by her daughters, Sarah Wooten (Kyle), Hendersonville, NC, and Jill Lyerly (Short) of Salisbury, NC. Her grandchildren, Curt Owen of Raleigh, Candice Owen Walsh (Sean) of Pisgah Forest, Graham and Haley Lyerly of Salisbury and her two Great Granddaughters, Emma Beth and Corbyn Leigh Walsh. Also her siblings, Albert Weast, Bob Weast, Jean Nolley, and Lois Salter. Also a surrogate “son”, Johnny Moore of Cleveland.

The funeral will be held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Mooresville Road on Friday, March 30th at 12:30 pm with visitation at the church from 11 am to 12 noon.   Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are given to Nazareth Children Home, PO Box 1938, Rockwell, NC28138 or Boys and Girls Club of Transylvania County, PO Box 1360, Brevard, NC 28712.

The family gives special thanks to her two caregivers, Mitzi Smoot and Cyndie Mazzio.  These two ladies enriched our Mother’s Life.
